Kaysville Fire Begins Performing Field RSI IntubationsAfter two years in the making, select Kaysville Fire Department paramedics can now perform rapid sequence induction (RSI) intubations. RSI is used when a patient presents with issues that will make intubation difficult (they're too responsive, they have an intact gag reflex, they are clenching their jaw, etc.). Using a series of medications, the paramedic sedates and then temporarily paralyzes the patient, allowing for the intubation tube to be placed. The KFD paramedics selected to perform RSI had to meet certain experience and training requirements to perform RSI intubations. Those requirements include: - Five years of experience as a full-time paramedic in a busy EMS system (each of the candidates selected have previously worked for busy metro EMS systems and/or flown as flight paramedics). - Completing a 16-hour difficult airway course. - Performing 30 intubations in the operating room under the supervision of an anesthesiologist. - Completing 40 hours of in-house airway management and pharmacology classes. - Receiving a final review & sign-off from our department's medical control doctor. Kaysville Fire is now one of two fire departments in Davis County and one of about half a dozen in the entire State of Utah that can perform field RSI intubations. Recently KFD Captain/Paramedic Jason Taylor performed KFD's first RSI intubation on a trauma patient. A medical helicopter flew to the scene to transport the patient. Afterwards, the flight nurse on that helicopter gave follow-up to KFD on how the RSI went from her perspective, stating that: "I watched the captain carefully advance the Glidescope and place an 8.0 ETT successfully on the first pass attempt. The crew helped us quickly package the patient & assisted us in a hot load while on scene. Overall, I was very impressed with the RSI procedure as well as the entire scene call. Thank you again to Kaysville Fire Department. I’ll happily work with your crew any day!" The fire department is excited to have another tool in our toolbox that will provide a higher level of care to patients in our community and lead to better outcomes.

Local Officials Day at the CapitolThe Kaysville Youth City Council and Elected Officials had the opportunity to attend Local Officials Day at the Utah State Capitol this month. Local Officials Day at the Legislature is a ULCT effort bringing city youth councils, municipal leaders, and state legislators together to open lines of communication and resolve issues affecting our communities. Our Youth City Council were able to meet with Representative Ariel Defay, tour the Capitol with Senate President Stuart Adams, and have a one-on-one meeting with Governor Cox. It was great to see these young adults actively engaging in learning more about how to be more involved in their local legislative processes, and take action to make a positive difference in the community.

Snow RemovalKaysville City Ordinance 9-2-3 prohibits any obstruction of travel on public sidewalks. Property owners are required to remove snow on all public sidewalks abutting their property. It is illegal to shovel or blow snow onto the street. This is problematic, especially when a street has already been plowed, as this snow is easily frozen, reducing traction and becoming a striking hazard on the road. This can be a headache for City crews, but it also affects you and your neighbors as well. If there is a fire hydrant near your house, clear the snow around it. Make a wide enough perimeter around it (about 3 feet) for firefighters to work. Also, clear a path from the hydrant to the street.
